The crane will soon leave for Mexico, where a major steel plant will use it for scrap steel handling operations. Because the customer operates around the clock, the project required a crane system capable of long working hours, stable travel, and reliable heavy-duty performance.

Built for High-Intensity Steel Mill Operations

During the early project stage, the customer shared several key requirements with Weihua’s engineering team.

The steel plant needed equipment that could handle continuous lifting cycles in a demanding outdoor environment. In addition, the customer wanted higher operating efficiency and lower long-term maintenance pressure.

To meet those requirements, Weihua designed the crane according to European and American lifting equipment standards. Engineers also customized the structure, hoisting system, and material selection based on the actual working conditions at the steel mill.

Unlike standard gantry cranes, this model focuses on continuous high-load operation and intelligent control performance.

Large Structure with Wide Yard Coverage

The crane stands 30 meters tall and uses an 85-meter main girder span with a 50-meter gauge. As a result, it can cover a very large operating area inside the scrap yard.

The large structure allows operators to move materials more efficiently across different handling zones. At the same time, the wide coverage reduces unnecessary equipment movement during daily operation.

For large steel plants, this type of layout can improve handling coordination and reduce waiting time during loading and unloading work.

Fast Travel and Flexible Handling

Weihua equipped the crane with a high-speed trolley system designed for frequent heavy-duty operation.

The hoisting speed reaches 50 meters per minute, while the traveling speed exceeds 150 meters per minute. Therefore, operators can move scrap materials quickly across the yard without slowing down production flow.

The crane also supports multiple handling methods. Engineers installed an intelligent spreader mounting system that allows fast switching between an electromagnetic chuck and a hydraulic grab.

Because of this design, the steel plant can handle different scrap materials with the same crane system. The customer can also adjust handling methods based on changing production tasks.

Intelligent Anti-Sway Control Improves Accuracy

For scrap handling operations, load sway can affect both positioning efficiency and operational safety.

To solve this issue, Weihua integrated a dual anti-sway control system that combines mechanical stability with electrical closed-loop control.

Even during high-speed travel, the system keeps load movement under control and helps operators position materials more accurately.

As a result, the crane delivers smoother movement, faster handling cycles, and more stable operation during daily work.

Safety and Reliability Remain Key Priorities

Weihua also placed strong emphasis on operational safety throughout the design process.

The crane uses a real-time monitoring system that tracks lifting height and operating conditions during movement. In addition, the hoisting motor, braking system, and wire ropes all include large safety margins for continuous heavy-duty operation.

The overload detection system can also identify off-center loading conditions quickly. This helps operators maintain safer handling performance during complex lifting tasks.

Because steel plants operate continuously, long-term reliability played an important role in this project as well.

Weihua selected long-life components for the hoisting and traveling systems to reduce maintenance frequency. Meanwhile, advanced communication technology helps maintain stable signal transmission and an uninterrupted power supply during operation.

More Intelligent Gantry Cranes Are Already in Production

This project represents another overseas delivery milestone for Weihua’s intelligent crane solutions.

Today, more steel manufacturers are focusing on automated handling, stable operation, and lower maintenance costs. As a result, intelligent gantry cranes are becoming increasingly important in modern steel production environments.

Following the successful completion of this project, Weihua has already started manufacturing two additional gantry cranes of the same model.

Once all three cranes arrive at the steel plant, they will support continuous scrap handling operations and help improve overall production efficiency at the facility.
