Case Study | Container Gantry Cranes for African Port Project Complete Factory Acceptance Test

Project Information

  • Project Type: Container Handling Equipment for Port Operations
  • Destination: Africa
  • Equipment Supplied: Customized Heavy-Duty Container Gantry Cranes
  • Current Progress: Factory Acceptance Test Completed / Shipment Preparation Underway

Weihua Group recently completed the factory acceptance process for a new batch of container gantry cranes for a port expansion project in Africa.

After the final inspection and operational testing, Weihua prepared the equipment for shipment. The cranes will soon arrive at the customer’s terminal for installation and commissioning.

The customer launched this project to improve container handling efficiency and reduce congestion inside the yard area. In recent years, cargo throughput at the port has continued to increase, creating higher demands on daily handling operations.

Unlike standard export projects, this order required several technical adjustments based on the local operating environment. During the design stage, Weihua engineers considered high daytime temperatures, airborne dust, long working hours, and continuous lifting cycles.

Built for Real Port Working Conditions

During the early project discussions, the customer explained several problems with previously used equipment.

For example, some crane systems overheated during peak operating periods. In addition, frequent maintenance affected terminal efficiency during busy shipping schedules.

Instead of recommending a standard model, Weihua’s engineering team studied the site conditions and proposed a more practical crane solution for long-term operation.

As a result, the team optimized several key areas of the crane system for African port conditions:

  • Weihua upgraded the ventilation system inside the electrical rooms for high-temperature operation
  • Meanwhile, engineers selected electrical components with better thermal stability
  • The design team also reinforced the main steel structure for frequent full-load handling
  • In addition, technicians optimized the anti-sway control system for more accurate container positioning
  • Finally, engineers redesigned maintenance access points to simplify daily inspections

The spreader system supports 20ft, 40ft, and 45ft containers. Therefore, operators can switch between different container sizes without complicated manual adjustment.

Factory Acceptance Testing Completed Successfully

Before delivery, Weihua engineers carried out a complete factory acceptance test at the production facility.

The testing process included:

  • No-load operation testing
  • Full-load lifting trials
  • Trolley travel checks
  • Braking response tests
  • Electrical commissioning
  • Continuous operation simulation

During the inspection process, the customer’s technical representatives reviewed the crane performance on site.

According to the testing results, the cranes maintained stable travel speed, smooth hoisting movement, and accurate positioning under rated working conditions. At the same time, the control system and safety protection functions performed normally throughout the inspection process.

After the final review, the customer approved the equipment for shipment.

Preparing for Overseas Installation

Weihua is currently preparing the cranes for ocean transportation. After that, the company will ship the equipment to the project site in several stages.

Once the cranes arrive in Africa, Weihua’s overseas service engineers will support installation, commissioning, and load testing on site.

In addition, the project includes operator training and maintenance guidance. This support will help the customer shorten the startup period after installation.

Supporting Port Development Across Africa

Today, many ports across Africa continue expanding their cargo handling capacity and upgrading terminal infrastructure. As a result, demand for reliable container handling equipment keeps growing.

For many operators, lifting capacity is no longer the only concern. Instead, customers now pay closer attention to equipment stability, maintenance cost, and long-term operating reliability.

Projects like this show how customer priorities are changing. More terminals now prefer crane systems that can handle demanding working conditions while remaining easy to maintain over time.

Looking ahead, Weihua will continue working with port operators, logistics companies, and industrial customers across international markets. The company focuses on customized crane solutions based on real project requirements and actual operating conditions.
