Case Study | 50-Ton Low-Voltage Rail Transfer Cart for Steel Billet Handling in Kazakhstan

Project Information

  • Project Location: Karaganda, Kazakhstan
  • Industry: Steel Manufacturing
  • Equipment Supplied: Weihua KPD-50T Low-Voltage Rail Electric Transfer Cart
  • Application: Steel Billet Transport Over 30m Rail Track

A steel plant in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, recently improved its billet handling process with a 50-ton low-voltage rail transfer cart supplied by Weihua Group.

The customer needed a reliable transport solution for heavy steel billets inside a harsh industrial environment. The transfer route covers a 30-meter rail track and requires stable operation under continuous production conditions.

In addition, the site faces extremely cold winters, with temperatures dropping to around -25°C. Because of this, standard transport equipment often struggles with startup stability and long-term reliability.

After reviewing the production layout and operating conditions, Weihua engineers recommended a KPD-50T low-voltage rail electric transfer cart designed for heavy-duty steel mill applications.

Reliable Heavy Load Transport on a Fixed Rail System

Steel billet transport requires stable movement under heavy loads and strict safety control. For this project, Weihua designed a 50-ton transfer cart with a 6m × 2.5m platform.

The system runs on a 30-meter rail track and supports a travel speed of 0–15 m/min. This allows smooth and controlled transport of steel billets across the workshop.

To improve operational stability, the system uses a variable frequency drive. As a result, the cart achieves smooth acceleration and deceleration during startup and stopping phases.

In addition, a hydraulic buffering system reduces impact during movement and improves load stability during transport.

Safe Low-Voltage Power Supply for Industrial Use

Low-Voltage Rail Transfer Cart

One of the key requirements in this project was operational safety in a heavy industrial environment.

To meet this requirement, Weihua adopted a 36V low-voltage rail power supply system. This design eliminates the need for trailing cables and reduces electrical risks during operation.

Because there are no external cables on the ground, the system also avoids mechanical interference during daily production. This improves both safety and reliability inside the workshop.

Designed for Extreme Cold Weather Operation

Karaganda experiences long and harsh winters, with temperatures often dropping to -25°C or lower.

To ensure stable performance in cold conditions, Weihua selected low-temperature resistant motors and specialized lubricants designed for sub-zero environments.

The system follows FEM 1.001 standards and includes C4 anti-corrosion protection with IP55 electrical sealing. These features help the equipment maintain stable performance in dust, moisture, and cold exposure.

During commissioning, the transfer cart started normally and maintained smooth operation even under low-temperature testing conditions.

Stable Performance in Continuous Steel Plant Operation

Steel production requires equipment that can operate continuously without frequent interruptions.

During operation, the transfer cart completed 12-hour continuous running tests without failure. The system maintained stable speed control and accurate positioning throughout the entire cycle.

The variable frequency drive system also improved operational smoothness. Operators can control movement precisely, which reduces stress on both equipment and materials during transport.

As a result, the customer reported a 35% reduction in maintenance costs compared with the previous transport system.

Improving Efficiency in Harsh Industrial Environments

After installation, the steel plant experienced improved workflow efficiency in billet handling operations.

Material transport between production areas became more stable and predictable. At the same time, operators gained better control over heavy load movement across long distances.

The low-voltage rail system also reduced operational risks and improved overall safety inside the workshop.

Heavy-Duty Rail Transfer Solutions for Steel Industry Applications

Today, steel plants operate under increasing pressure to improve efficiency while maintaining safety and reducing maintenance costs. This is especially true in cold climate regions where equipment reliability is critical.

Compared with traditional transport systems, low-voltage rail transfer carts provide a safer power supply, better load stability, and lower maintenance requirements.

Weihua continues to deliver customized rail transfer solutions for steel mills, heavy manufacturing plants, and industrial production facilities worldwide. Each system is designed based on real operating conditions to ensure long-term performance, safety, and operational efficiency.
