Weihua Cranes Put into Operation at Modjo Dry Port in Ethiopia

The expansion of Modjo Dry Port in Ethiopia reached a new stage in September 2026. As part of the project, Weihua supplied two Rail-Mounted Gantry Cranes (RMG) and three Rubber-Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTG) for container handling at the expanded facility.

The five cranes have now entered operation. They handle railway container transfers, container stacking, and yard operations, helping connect rail transportation with the storage and movement of containers inside the dry port.

A New Chapter for Modjo Dry Port

Located near Addis Ababa, Modjo Dry Port is an important inland logistics hub in Ethiopia. It handles cargo moving through the Ethio-Djibouti transport corridor and plays an important role in the country’s import and export activities.

The recent expansion adds new yards, warehouses, terminals, and other facilities to the site. According to the World Bank, the project aims to increase capacity and improve the flow of goods through the logistics system. Ethiopia officially inaugurated the first phase of the expanded logistics center on September 10, 2026.

For a container terminal, new infrastructure also creates a need for suitable handling equipment. This is where Weihua’s RMG and RTG cranes come into operation.

Two Crane Types for Different Handling Needs

The two types of cranes serve different purposes in the yard.

The two RMG cranes run on fixed rails and mainly handle containers in the railway area. Their fixed travel path allows operators to move containers between railway lines and designated storage areas in an organized way.

The three RTG cranes run on rubber tires and move between different areas of the container yard. They mainly handle container stacking and relocation, where greater flexibility is needed.

Together, the two types of cranes support container movement between the railway and yard areas. Weihua’s project information confirms that the company supplied all five cranes for container yard handling and railway container transfer at Modjo Dry Port.

Weihua’s Equipment Now Serving the Project

For Weihua, the Modjo Dry Port project is more than the delivery of five cranes. It puts the company’s RMG and RTG equipment into daily operation at an important inland logistics facility in East Africa.

The project also marks Ethiopia’s first introduction of a complete set of RMG and RTG container handling equipment, according to Weihua’s project information. The RMG cranes support rail-side container handling, while the RTG cranes provide flexible movement within the yard.

As Modjo Dry Port continues its operations after the expansion, these cranes will take part in the daily movement and storage of containers. For Weihua, the project adds another overseas application to its experience in container handling and logistics equipment.

Weihua will continue to provide crane solutions for ports, dry ports, railway terminals, and other logistics facilities, with equipment configured around the actual working conditions and requirements of each project.
